Fright Train Upgrade System
Weapon tiers, run upgrades, and the Bite-Back Machine economy.
Fright Train’s progression system has two parallel upgrade tracks that operate between train sections: weapon upgrades at the Bite-Back Machine and run upgrades from the locked cabinet. Both cost credits, both reset if you fail a run, and both can completely change how you approach the rest of the expedition.
This guide explains how each system works, what separates a tier-4 weapon from a tier-1, and how to evaluate upgrade cabinet choices.
Bite-Back Machine - weapon tiers
The Bite-Back Machine is located at the end of each train section. It upgrades weapons through four tiers:
| Tier | What you get | When to prioritize |
|---|---|---|
| Tier 1 | Base weapon as found | Default state |
| Tier 2 | Improved accuracy and handling | Early runs when credits are tight |
| Tier 3 | Higher damage and capacity | Mid-run when the weapon is earning its space |
| Tier 4 | Wild new ability - extremely powerful | Only when you can sustain the ammunition |
Tier 4 weapons gain a unique ability that fundamentally changes the weapon’s role. This tier is achievable only through the Bite-Back Machine - you will not find tier-4 drops in the wild.
While you will mostly find lower-tier weapons throughout the train, you can upgrade them at Bite-Back machines for a price. The cost scales with tier, so plan your upgrade path early.
Upgrade cabinet - run upgrades
Next to each Bite-Back Machine, you will find a locked cabinet with three random upgrades to choose from. To unlock it, you need a code painted somewhere within the train section.
The code appears on walls or surfaces - scan carefully whenever you enter a distinct room. Enter the code at the cabinet to access your three options.
You can only purchase one upgrade per section, so choose wisely. Options might include:
- Economy upgrades - reduced ammunition costs, better credit finds
- Damage upgrades - higher precision, faster clear times
- Defensive upgrades - cold resistance, faster health recovery
- Mobility upgrades - quicker movement between cars, faster reload
Read the tooltips carefully. The choices vary, and there is no universal best pick. Prefer the option that addresses your current weakness.
Universal storage locker
Each car now includes a universal storage locker so you can store weapons you want to upgrade later or extra items you cannot carry. Use this to:
- Preserve a weapon with good base stats until you have credits for tier 4
- Store off-caliber ammunition for weapons you plan to switch to
- Keep mission-critical items without carrying them through every storm
Credit spending priorities
Budget discipline matters because upgrades are not permanent across runs. A failed run means starting over with tier 1 weapons and no cabinet purchases.
Spending priority:
- Ammo and essentials first - never upgrade a weapon you cannot feed
- One primary upgrade path - pick the gun that matches your storm style and commit
- Cabinet upgrades that fix run gaps - if you are dying to cold, take a heat-related option
- Cosmetic or novelty upgrades last - fashion is earned after stable extracts
Common mistakes
- Upgrading a weapon you cannot maintain ammunition for - tier 4 means nothing with an empty mag
- Spending all credits on tier 2 upgrades across multiple weapons instead of one tier 4
- Ignoring the painted code and losing a cabinet selection
- Hoarding credits so aggressively that you enter a boss fight with base weapons
- Not using universal storage to preserve a good weapon until you can afford its upgrades
Matching upgrades to playstyle
Close-range storm fighter: Prioritize shotgun or SMG tier 4, then take cabinet options that reduce cooldown or improve handling in tight spaces.
Precision rifle agent: Focus tier 4 on a rifle that rewards steady aim, then take accuracy or weak-point damage cabinet upgrades.
Economy runner: Keep weapons at tier 2-3 until you have a credit buffer, prioritize cabinet upgrades that increase credit finds or reduce purchase costs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers for Antarctic agents.
What does tier 4 weapon ability look like?
Tier 4 gives each weapon a wild new ability specific to its archetype. The devlog described it as extremely powerful but requiring ammunition sustainability to use effectively.
Can I unlock the upgrade cabinet without the painted code?
No. The code is painted somewhere within the section - scan walls in every distinct room you enter before the section escape countdown begins.
Do upgrade purchases carry across failed runs?
No. Failed runs reset all Bite-Back Machine tiers and cabinet purchases. Only permanent unlocks (skins, accessories) persist.
Should I upgrade every weapon I find?
No. Pick one primary weapon and invest in its tier path. Spreading credits across multiple weapons leaves you with several underpowered options.
